You definitely saw the better of his two shows in NYC. Travelled from the UK for them and was pretty disapointed after the first night. I guess he was too pissed to play properly and if it hadn’t been for the band – especially Michael Bland on drums – I think it could have been a disaster.

I know that it can be great hearing the songs you really love played live, but when they are sung off key and butchered beyond recognition it is saddening.

The second show was SO much better. Paul was considerably more focussed than the day before. He seemed to make a effort to pull it all together, maybe to make up for the previous night’s disaster.

It would be churlish to argue about the setlist, he was playing the songs I love with more passion than on the few other occasions I’ve seen him.

It was good to see him come back for the genuine encore of Alex Chilton.

The second show made the journey over worthwhile.

Mim, I f’in hated I could not call you during that show.

I know the original premise of “left of the dial” fine, it was the woman who was the inspiration I was completely lacking :)

See, I thought Let’s Active, too, but that was Sara Romweber and Faye Hunter and it was DEFINITELY not about either of them. Which is why I came up with Linda Hopper but that doesn’t feel right either.

I might be wrong, but I’ve heard “Left Of The Dial” was about the girl who played guitar/keys as the forth member of Let’s Active before the original band broke up. It was written about how the ‘Mats and Let’s Active seemed to follow each other around the country and the best way for Paul to “catch up” with her was to listen for the obligatory college radio interview as he left town.

Btw, I’m proud to be know as Miriam’s summer boyfriend. It was a great summer.

Honestly can’t remember, but I’m just running through all my Mats shows in my head … the under-a-fake-name CBGB gig, and then standing on a chair at Irving Plaza that really really hot summer of 85, with my summer boyfriend Rich from WNYC standing behind me (he could see, he was so much taller than me)…
