“can ya? CAN YA?”

Pearl Jam : The Real Me

So here’s the drive-by critique. Disclaimer: ridiculous obsessive Who fan ahead.

Jeff Ament, someone who was never my favorite PJ dude, just KILLS it. It is absolutely, completely, letter perfect, while still somehow feeling like it was Jeff Ament playing and not some guy trying to copy Entwistle. The guitars, as if Mike and Stone couldn’t play this blind, it’s a no-brainer, no question that they’re fantastic, and I loved watching how alive Stone seemed. Vedder, well, goes without saying. Funnily enough, it’s Matt Cameron who is the most disappointing and out of place here, and I think it’s just because Matt is a very economical drummer. He’s more of a jazz drummer than anything else. Keith Moon was anything but. Let’s remember that I am a drooling Matt Cameron fangirl here before taking me to task: he’s more than fine, and better than 99.9% of the other contemporary drummers would be on this song. But it would be like putting Charlie Watts on this song. He just couldn’t do it. Doesn’t mean Charlie Watts isn’t a golden god of drumming or anything like that

I always, always wanted PJ to cover this song, because I knew that they could NAIL it, even without horns. With horns, major props for taking the time to rehearse and integrate them into the song instead of doing what most current rock bands do, which is sort of stick the horns awkwardly outside the song. And they’re mixed better than the Who ever got their own horn section mixed live.
