Caryn, we apparently disagree deeply on “the Jay Weinberg thing” but I just had to thank you personally for writing this. I’ve already come back to read it several times because you captured much of what went through my own head while watching this wonderful evening unfold. Until Thom Zimny or somebody else gets to assemble the whole thing (minus just a few minutes, of course, from the false starts, makeup breaks, etc.) for a DVD release (I hope), this is probably the closest record we’ll have, not of everything that occurred, but more importantly of how it all felt for many of us in the audience that night. I was moved especially by your paragraph on Bruce performing “The Rising” with The Attractions and only two members of The E Street Band, and how that performance gave hope to you as someone deeply concerned about a not-too-distant future that may no longer include The E Street Band as we’ve come to know and love them. At another time, given the opportunity, I might be willing to argue that Bruce’s past performances with The Seeger Sessions Band and even the ’92 band also offered some similar glimpses of hope for the future. For now, however, all I can and wish to offer personally once again is my deepest appreciation for your having written this great essay.
